Case Study: Helping Kimberly-Clark embed sustainability into the heart of the workforce
Kimberly-Clark has been taking sustainability seriously for years. It is an integral component of its Global Business Plan. When the European Head of Sustainability felt he needed a better understanding of the business position, to inform future sustainability planning and strategy, he asked Ampleo to design a bespoke staff survey to achieve three objectives:
- to find out what Kimberly-Clark Europe employees understand about sustainability, how relevant they think it is to their jobs, and what ideas they have for improvement
- to build a network of interested employees to improve engagement on sustainability issues, increasing exchange of information and ideas
- to understand what currently engages individuals in the sustainability agenda and what the barriers are
We designed and piloted a survey which went on to achieve an excellent 26% response rate. We helped Kimberly-Clark gain an in-depth understanding of the survey results to identify effective actions in response. The strategy at Kimberly-Clark is for all employees to adopt sustainable business practices in everything they do. The results of our research provided invaluable insight into how best to embed sustainability into the heart of the workforce in the future. As a result of the survey, K-C have:
- put together an e-mail group of those interested to know more
- initiated quarterly European Sustainability Updates
- created a regular email 'Sustainability Delivers'; bringing employees sustainability stories from other employees and parts of the business
- put together a specific plan for the UK business (who were identified in the Survey as less engaged than other business areas)
