Case Study: Kick-starting the University of Brighton’s Carbon Management Programme

The University of Brighton has a carbon reduction target of 50% in 5 years. Ampleo was asked to help build momentum towards achieving that target. We ran two targeted workshops using a mix of theory, activity sessions and facilitated discussion to engage a wide range of staff.

The first workshop was with a cross section of staff. After an initial look at the organisation’s carbon footprint, participants identified ideas for saving carbon and for communicating the challenge across the University. The project leads took away a list of actions for the Carbon Management Programme and staff went away inspired to take action through their everyday roles.

Workshop objectives met:

  • Identify, prioritise and develop carbon saving opportunities for the University of Brighton
  • Engage and mobilise the wider team to support carbon management

The second workshop was to help the Carbon Management Team build their understanding of change management in the context of their work. We first looked at change management theory, applying the Cycle of Change and Progression to the objectives of the team. We then helped the team understand their own reaction to change, and how others they are working with might react, to help them manage future change more effectively.

Workshop objectives met:

  • Help the new Carbon Management Team develop a shared understanding of their project aims, goals and how to achieve the change needed
  • Improve group dynamics and strengthen the team
