Case Study: Helping the EDF Energy Sustainability Team influence the business

EDF Energy has 15 sustainability commitments which they make a priority for their business. Following a restructure of the Energy Sourcing and Customer Supply section, Ampleo was asked by EDF’s Sustainability Manager to help the Sustainability Team develop their influencing skills and focus on the challenges ahead. Their aim is to embed sustainability within the new structure so that it becomes ‘business as usual’ through daily discussions, decisions and actions. There are a number of departments within the Energy Sourcing and Customer Supply section, and members of the Sustainability Team had recently been partnered with different departments to enhance engagement.

Ampleo designed a workshop to meet a number of objectives:

  • Develop the team’s ability to build relationships with key influencers
  • Build understanding of different communication styles and what this means for their work
  • Identify key stakeholders within the organisation
  • Improve understanding of the culture they operate in
  • Introduce new tools and techniques to help the team achieve their business objectives

To apply the content of the workshop directly to the work of the team, we included a number of interactive work based exercises and looked in detail at the meaning of the sustainability objectives, both to the team and to their stakeholders. We played some fun but thought provoking games, including attempting to sell sustainability to the Queen! And, to finish, we facilitated discussion between the team and their managers to help participants set individual SMART goals, based on what they had learnt over the two days.

Feedback collected after the event was overwhelmingly positive. All delegates agreed they felt more confident influencing others as a result of the workshop. They also agreed that the course will help them with their work embedding sustainability across the business.
