Case Study: Staff Survey to inform future Denbighshire County Council (DCC) green initiatives

DCC was looking to understand how to engage their staff in green initiatives more effectively. They wanted to respond to staff needs and communicate in a fashion that connects with their organisational values.

In order to do this, the staff were surveyed about their environmental motivation and values. The Ampleo Environmental Engagement Survey was completed by Denbighshire County Council employees. Over three weeks, up to 446 DCC employees responded. Out of 4,500 employees that’s 10% of staff.

  • Firstly Individuals answered questions about their existing attitudes towards climate change and the environment, and their motivation to undertake pro-environmental behaviour in the workplace.
  • Next individuals were asked to think about the values they hold about environmental matters in the workplace. These values can be thought of in the context of organisational culture.
  • Finally, the questionnaire measured how individuals react on an emotional level to language that is frequently used when communicating environmental issues.
  • The results were gathered and reporting was broken down by the five directorates that answered the online survey. DCC have used the results to inform a number of projects including the messaging for their Climate Week. It was also used to inform the wording of questions relating to carbon in the Staff Travel Survey, for which they had a good response rate.
